Convict Lake Wedding Photography with Blake and Abbie

Here is the first round of photos from Blake and Abbie’s Convict Lake wedding on Saturday.

As is the norm with weddings at Convict, which is about 15 minutes south of Mammoth Lakes, the views were stunning and the food was amazing.

We’ve shot a few weddings there, but this is the first that the bridal party stayed in one of the resort’s cabins. It was a cool experience for the largely Southern California-based wedding party, and made for awesome detail shots while the bride and bridesmaids got ready.

I hung with the ladies for the beginning of the day, so many of these shots feature them. Josh was with the guys and got some great images of them around the resort before moving down to the lake for the ceremony. Look for those and more of his side of it on Thursday.

After makeup, hair and preparations were done, the girls and I jumped into the shuttle down to the lake where Mike Melin, Convict’s event coordinator, had everything looking great and running on time.

The ceremony, which is held in front of one of California’s most dramatic mountain backdrops, went off without a hitch. After some formals with the family at the lake, we jumped back into the shuttle with the bridesmaids and groomsmen to do some more portraits down in the valley looking up to Mt. Morrison and northwest towards Mammoth Mountain. Josh will post some of those shots on Thursday as well.

We’ve been talking about doing some of the post-ceremony portraits down there for a while, and the extra work and time it took paid off. Although the lake-side shot is super dramatic and an Eastern Sierra classic, the canyon’s exposure makes for harsh afternoon light that doesn’t affect the valley floor near the Mammoth-Yosemite Airport. The shuttle driver was patient with us and it all fit into the schedule. It’s’s something we’ll definitely suggest to couples at Convict weddings in the future. I think the results will speak for themselves.

After the formal portraits were done, we headed back up to Convict’s tent for the party. Dinner was served (which was one of the day’s highlights for me), and the real fun began. The usual debauchery ensued, including the photo booth set up in the bar, some memorable speeches, and great company in Convict’s cozy tent.

Josh and I ended the night doing some creative night photography under the partial moon. Blake and Abbie came out and did a few with us, and then we made some cool images of the glowing tent.

Overall, it was another incredibly successful wedding at Convict Lake (click here and here for a look at a past wedding at Convict). Josh and I both captured the day in our dynamic, varied styles and we had as much fun as anybody there.

Check back Thursday for much more, and then again next week for shots from Jeremy and Lizzie’s wedding, which we’ll be shooting Saturday in Reno.
