A few weeks ago photographer Rebecca Garrett and I went to the Eureka Valley Sand Dunes with Mammoth yoga instructor Scott Saltsman to make portraits in a different setting than we normally see.
I had never been out to Eureka Valley before and it was an incredible spot. At nearly 700 feet tall, it’s the tallest dune in North America and is surrounded by bright red, mineral-rich desert hills. The dunes became part of Death Valley National Park in 1994 and, through some sort of agreement with the nearby Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, it’s part of an air force training route. Just as we were pulling up, two jets (maybe F-16s) buzzed right over the car and around the back of the dune. We weren’t quick enough to get any phone video of it, but these people were.
We spent a good part of the afternoon and evening playing around on the dunes and having Scott try various poses. We ended up having an amazing sunset and the weather was incredible.
This was the second time we’ve shot with Scott, and definitely won’t be the last. We did the first set above Crowley Lake last fall , check it out here.
That’s all this week. Check back in the next weeks for more from last weekend’s Mammoth Mountain wedding with Lauren and Blake.
