The Winters family has been vacationing in Lee Vining, at the base of Tioga Pass and the East Entrance to Yosemite, for years. Because the area means so much to them, they decided to create some family portraits there this year to document their family’s incredible dynamic.
Heather is a fine photographer herself but capturing a self portrait with your family is never an easy task. That’s magnified when you’ve got four girls under the age of five to organize.
We started near Lembert Dome, just west of the Tuolumne Pass entrance to Yosemite. They just spent the day hiking in Lundy Canyon and were exhausted, but I convinced them to do a short hike up the granite dome with me.
From there, we went out into the meadows, and then back to the east and Ellory Lake and Tioga. The sun was setting just as we got to the lake and the light was amazing.
We finished the evening on the overlook at the top of Tioga Pass with some individual shots of the girls and then a few more of the family together. As we were setting up a shot, a coyote began howling on a ridge line above us. The silhouetted coyote was a classic Sierra scene and a great way to end the evening.
That’s all for this week. Josh has a few Tahoe weddings to post next week, and we’re shooting Sarah and Corey’s Forest Chapel, Hayden Cabin wedding this weekend in Mammoth. We’ll post some from that next week as well.
